We each have a body, a soul, and a spirit.
It’s easy to confuse the soul and the spirit, but distinguishing each from the other is essential to walk in total health.
There are two unseen parts of us, the spirit and the soul, and they are different.
God intends to redeem all of you, that is, gift you with total wholeness. This includes not only our bodies and spirits, but also our souls-- the place where our emotions and thoughts and feelings reside.
A chain is only as strong as the weakest link.
Doesn’t matter how great the capacity of one link is if another flounders with minimal pressure.
We’re the same way.
- If our bodies aren’t healthy, we won’t be able to do the amazing things placed in our souls: we won’t be able to live our calling and fulfill our destiny.
- If our minds are occupied with worries and fears… it can debilitate our bodies…
- And if our emotions aren’t whole… they can shut the other areas down, too, as we continue to live from the unprocessed pains and unhealed hurts of the past.
In the same way we pause when we encounter physical pain, we should also stop when we experience emotional pain.
This requires us to recognize that some wounds and scars aren’t visible— they’re invisible. Even though they remain unseen, they’re just as real.
Rather than minimizing our hurts and pushing forward, we acknowledge them and slow down. We rest, we recharge.
We may find we’re still wounded, but at that point we’re able to move forward with better perspective as we step back into the rhythm we were designed to live.
"I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers…"
Those are the words of the apostle John, in the short letter he wrote to his church (see 3 John 2).
He wanted them to prosper (to gain) in every area of life.
And in their health.
Furthermore, he assumed that the measure of health they experienced in the soul would be the gauge of how well those other areas went.
That means we should pay attention to the soul (which is different than our spirit— see Hebrews 4:12).
